Barrier Support
The skin barrier — known scientifically as the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of the skin and its first line of defense against the world. Think of it as a brick-and-mortar structure: skin cells (the bricks) held together by a matrix of lipids including ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol (the mortar). When this structure is intact, skin retains moisture efficiently, resists environmental aggressors, and maintains a calm, balanced state.
When the barrier is compromised — through over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, environmental stress, hormonal changes, or simply the natural decline of lipid production with age — everything changes. Moisture escapes more easily, irritants penetrate more readily, and the skin becomes reactive, tight, flaky, and prone to redness and sensitivity.
Barrier repair is not a trend — it is the foundation of all effective skincare. No serum, treatment, or active ingredient can perform optimally on a compromised barrier. Restoring barrier integrity is always the first priority.
This collection focuses on the key ingredients that rebuild, reinforce, and protect the skin's barrier:
- Ceramides — the most critical lipids in the barrier matrix, ceramides seal moisture in and keep irritants out
- Fatty acids — replenish the lipid mortar between skin cells, restoring suppleness and reducing transepidermal water loss
- Cholesterol — works synergistically with ceramides and fatty acids to restore the barrier's structural integrity
- Squalane and plant oils — mimic the skin's natural sebum to nourish and protect without clogging pores
- Panthenol (Vitamin B5) — deeply hydrating and healing, panthenol supports barrier repair and reduces inflammation
- Niacinamide — stimulates ceramide production and strengthens the barrier from within
